Should I Reupholster My Furniture?

Reupholstery is a popular trend with furniture, but is it worth it? Better Homes and Gardens recommends the following to help you determine if you should reupholster your furniture:

-If your piece of furniture has a special history — has been in your family for generations, your grandmother gifted it to you, i.e. — you can find out the history of the piece. Once you know the quality, original cost, its age and other conditions, you can then determine if it’s worth upholstering.

-Did the piece ever live with smokers? If so, residual smoke has gone into the fabric and you may now never get rid of the smell. A garage and basement are notorious for high levels of humidity and dampness, which can also result in a musty smell. Mold loves to grow on linen, cotton and wood so check to see if the furniture was stored in a place that there was moisture or humidity present. The only way to deal with a smoke smell and mold is to completely strip the piece down to the frame, treat the wood for mold and then start rebuilding — which can be very costly. If the furniture was stored in a space easily accessible to bugs and insects, it might be best to toss it and purchase new.

-If the condition of the furniture is good, and the piece seems to work with your space, cleaning is also an option to consider. However, there is no guarantee that your furniture can be cleaned to your satisfaction. If it’s worth the expensive, call Shorewest Home Services to get a quote today.

-The cost of reupholstering can range from small to large. Depending on how much fabric you need and the part of the country you live can affect the price too. However, most of the time, upholstery can cost about the same price as a brand new furniture.
